Akhilesh Yadav’s Brahmin Outreach Signals New Electoral Strategy Ahead of UP 2027

New Delhi, August 07, 2026 With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election drawing closer, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav appears to be reshaping his political strategy in an effort to broaden the party’s support base. After positioning the SP around the 'PDA' (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula and frequently accusing the BJP of divisive politics, Akhilesh has now stated that the "P" in PDA also represents "Pandit." Speaking at a Brahmin/Prabuddh Varg Sammelan in Lucknow on August 5, he alleged that Brahmins have been targeted under the BJP, referred to Swami Avimukteshwaranand, and claimed that offerings made to Lord Ram at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir had been misappropriated by the ruling party. Political observers see this outreach as a reflection of changing electoral calculations rather than a shift in ideology. Brahmins account for an estimated 10–14% of Uttar Pradesh’s population and have largely backed the BJP in recent elections. Analysts believe that attracting even a section of this community could strengthen the SP’s position in what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 contest. The PDA formula, introduced in 2023 to expand the party’s traditional Yadav-Muslim support base by including backward classes, Dalits, and minorities, contributed to the SP’s improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The latest interpretation of PDA suggests the party is now attempting to widen that coalition further. The SP’s renewed emphasis on Hindu symbolism also stands in contrast to several episodes from its political history. During Mulayam Singh Yadav’s tenure as Chief Minister in 1990, police firing on kar sevaks during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement became one of the party’s most debated decisions. Although the official death toll was recorded at 16, that figure has been challenged by several organisations over the years. Mulayam later expressed regret over the incident while maintaining that the action was taken to reassure the Muslim community. The SP-BSP alliance’s 1993 campaign slogan, "Mile Mulayam Kanshi Ram, Hawa Ho Gaye Jai Shri Ram," was also widely viewed as positioning the alliance against the BJP’s Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Similarly, during Akhilesh Yadav’s tenure as Chief Minister, the government barred the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s proposed 84-Kosi Parikrama in 2013, citing law and order concerns, a move that drew criticism from Hindu organisations. As Uttar Pradesh moves towards the 2027 Assembly election, Akhilesh Yadav’s outreach to Brahmins marks a notable shift in the Samajwadi Party’s political messaging. Whether this expanded interpretation of the PDA formula succeeds in attracting new voters or is viewed as a strategic electoral repositioning is likely to become clearer as the campaign gains momentum.
