Delhi Building Collapse: Rescue Teams Race to Find Survivors

New Delhi, September 06, 2026 A six-storey building being used as a 75-bed paying guest accommodation collapsed in southwest Delhi's Satya Niketan at around 1:30 pm on Sunday, prompting an urgent rescue operation amid fears that several people may be trapped under the rubble. The incident has brought emergency teams together at the site, with authorities focusing on locating survivors and safely clearing the collapsed structure. Rescue personnel from the Delhi Police, fire department, ambulance services and disaster-response teams have been deployed at the spot. At least 12 fire tenders have been sent to the area, while an excavator is being used to clear the debris and additional machinery is being brought in to remove heavy slabs and girders. Initial reports gave different figures for those rescued, with a government representative saying six people had been saved, while Delhi Police confirmed two rescues and did not disclose the number of people potentially trapped. An eyewitness estimated that around 50 students may have been inside the building when it collapsed, adding that many were likely at the PG because it was Sunday. A student at the scene told ANI that he heard cries for help from beneath the debris, while another eyewitness identified the premises as a men's PG accommodation called 'Hostel Daze'. Local residents were also seen helping to remove debris by hand before rescue teams and heavy machinery could fully begin operations. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said she was deeply concerned by the building collapse and that rescue work was being carried out on a war footing. "The adjacent building has been vacated as a precautionary measure. Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to the affected families. The situation is being closely monitored, and all concerned agencies are working in coordination. The safety and well-being of every citizen remain our highest priority," she said. BJP MLA Anil Sharma, who was present at the site, said, "Some students are even making calls from within. It appears there are still others trapped inside. Rescue efforts are ongoing. We are praying to God. The chief minister has dispatched a full team here," he told reporters. Satya Niketan is located close to Delhi University's South Campus and has a large student population along with numerous PG accommodations. Student organisations have also reached the location to assist the rescue effort. As teams continue searching through the wreckage, the priority remains reaching anyone still trapped and bringing them out safely, while authorities work to establish the exact number of people affected by the collapse.
