Tata Sons Reappoints Chandrasekaran, Tata Trusts Objects
New Delhi, September 17, 2026 Tata Sons has decided to reappoint N Chandrasekaran as its Executive Chairman for another five years, reversing the uncertainty surrounding his future at the group. The decision comes weeks after Chandrasekaran had said he would not seek another term when his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027. At its September 17 meeting, the Tata Sons board said Chandrasekaran agreed to reconsider his decision following a request from the board. The board subsequently approved his reappointment by majority vote. The company said its Nomination and Remuneration Committee had earlier unanimously recommended that he continue, citing his contributions and the larger interests of the Tata Group. The issue had remained unresolved for several months. Tata Sons said the board had agreed in principle to another five-year term in September 2025, but formal approval was deferred in February 2026 due to a lack of unanimity. The matter was discussed again in May and June, before Chandrasekaran decided on August 12 not to offer himself for reappointment. The latest decision, however, has been challenged by Tata Trusts, which controls a 66% stake in the Tata Group. Trusts chairman Noel Tata voted against the proposal, and the Trusts said this made the resolution “legally void and without any basis.” It maintained that Chandrasekaran’s earlier decision not to continue after February 2027 had already been accepted and had attained finality. Tata Sons said it will initiate steps to comply with applicable RBI guidelines and seek guidance from the RBI, Tata Trusts and other stakeholders on the required compliance process. The disagreement now puts the focus on the next steps surrounding Chandrasekaran’s proposed continuation at the helm of Tata Sons.
