Jaishankar at UNGA: India Calls for Restraint as Global Conflicts Escalate
New Delhi, September 27, 2026 India placed the growing strain of multiple international conflicts at the heart of its message to the United Nations, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar calling for restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, he focused on the Gulf, Ukraine and West Asia as major challenges confronting the international community. Opening his address on behalf of India, Jaishankar said, "Namaskar from 1.4 billion people of Bharat. We are gathered at this General Assembly when the United Nations enters its ninth decade..." His remarks came against the backdrop of continuing geopolitical tensions and their wider humanitarian and economic consequences. Drawing attention to the situation in the Gulf, Jaishankar said, "This year, we are witnessing a conflict in the Gulf, exacerbating an already difficult situation. India calls upon all parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions and ensure protection of civilians..." The appeal underlined India’s focus on preventing further deterioration of the situation and safeguarding people caught in the conflict. The External Affairs Minister also turned to two other prolonged flashpoints. "The conflict in Ukraine, now in its fifth year, is equally concerning. Tensions and violence also continue in West Asia. A durable and lasting peace requires a two-state solution..." he said, linking India’s concerns over continuing violence with its stated support for a negotiated and lasting settlement in West Asia. Jaishankar’s UNGA address brought these separate conflicts under a common diplomatic message: prolonged hostilities require greater international engagement aimed at reducing tensions and protecting civilians. With the United Nations entering its ninth decade, India used the global platform to emphasise restraint and peaceful resolution at a time when several regions remain affected by war and instability.
