Varanasi's First Urban Ropeway Nears Completion, Set for December Launch
Lucknow, October 05, 2026 Varanasi is moving closer to a significant shift in its urban transportation system, with India's first urban transport ropeway nearing completion. The ambitious project is expected to improve connectivity across the city while providing an alternative to road travel, particularly for the large number of devotees and tourists who visit the holy city. The ₹807-crore Kashi Ropeway project, linking Cantt Railway Station with Godaulia, has achieved nearly 96% completion. Trial runs are currently underway, and passenger services are expected to begin in December 2026. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and make daily commuting across key parts of Varanasi faster and more convenient. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on March 24, 2023. With its completion approaching, the ropeway is expected to add a new dimension to Varanasi's transport infrastructure and strengthen connectivity for residents as well as visitors.
