UP Plans to Revive ASI Forts in Bundelkhand as Tourist Destinations
Lucknow | September 25, 2025 The Uttar Pradesh government has proposed taking over historic forts managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in Bundelkhand to transform them into heritage hotels, cultural centres, and tourist attractions. This initiative aims to preserve the state’s rich architectural legacy while boosting tourism and generating revenue. State Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jaiveer Singh, said the plan will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, similar to heritage property development in Rajasthan. “Uttar Pradesh has significant potential with its historical forts and monuments. By restoring and promoting them as tourist destinations, we can preserve our heritage and also create sustainable revenue sources for the state,” he said. In the first phase, 11 forts and heritage properties across the state have been identified for development. Among these, Kalinjar Fort in Banda is a prime candidate, along with four other key monuments in Bundelkhand. The government has already written to the Prime Minister, seeking approval to take over these ASI-managed sites. Singh added that private investors have shown interest in partnering for the restoration and development projects, which would include converting portions of the forts into luxury accommodation, exhibition spaces, and cultural hubs. This effort is part of a broader strategy to integrate heritage conservation with tourism promotion, creating new experiences for visitors while ensuring the maintenance of historic structures. With tourism emerging as a key economic driver, the state hopes this initiative will attract domestic and international tourists, encourage cultural engagement, and generate employment in heritage management, hospitality, and related sectors. The plan reflects Uttar Pradesh’s growing focus on leveraging its historical assets to foster tourism-led development.
