Lucknow, Dec 19, 2025 In a move aimed at modernizing postal services and attracting younger users, Uttar Pradesh is set to inaugurate its first ‘Gen Z’ post office today at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow campus. Unlike traditional post offices, this facility is designed to be tech-driven, youth-friendly, and visually appealing, blending modern conveniences with core postal services. The new post office, set up by the General Post Office (GPO), features QR code-based payment systems, auto-booking kiosks, and campus-inspired interiors. It offers cashless, faster transactions for services such as parcel booking, courier deliveries, and other postal functions. According to Pranav Kumar, Chief Postmaster General of the Uttar Pradesh circle, the aim is to create a postal space that resonates with students and young professionals, encouraging them to engage with physical postal services despite the prevalence of digital communication platforms like WhatsApp and email. The inauguration will be attended by Manmohan Prasad Gupta, director of IIM Lucknow, as the chief guest, along with Pranav Kumar, CPMG, and Sunil Kumar Rai, Postmaster General, Lucknow. The design of the post office has been largely conceptualized and executed by students, featuring vibrant artwork on the walls, air-conditioned interiors, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and seating arrangements similar to a café or student lounge. Coffee vending machines, selfie points, and relaxed seating aim to make the space inviting, blending functionality with leisure. This initiative is part of a larger effort by India Post to modernize its infrastructure and make postal services more relevant to younger generations. Plans are already underway to replicate similar facilities at other university campuses, including Allahabad University. The department hopes that by integrating technology, design, and convenience, it can reposition postal services as a useful and attractive option for youth, even in a world dominated by instant digital messaging. While traditional post offices often face declining footfalls among younger users, the Gen Z post office represents a strategic attempt to change perceptions.
