New Delhi, January 16, 2026 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to announce the name of its new national president on January 20, with the election process scheduled to begin a day earlier on January 19, party sources confirmed. Nominations for the top organisational post will be filed on January 19, paving the way for what is expected to be a smooth and largely uncontested transition at the helm of the ruling party. According to party insiders, the post is widely expected to go to BJP national working president Nitin Nabin. The 45-year-old leader from Bihar was appointed to the role of national working president on December 14 last year, a move seen as a clear signal of a generational shift within the party’s leadership. Sources indicate that Nabin is likely to file his nomination next week and may be elected unopposed, as there is little indication of any rival candidate entering the race. Nitin Nabin represents the Bankipur assembly constituency in Bihar and is a five-time MLA. He has also served twice as a minister in the Bihar government. The son of late BJP veteran and former MLA Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, he is regarded within the party as an ideologically committed leader with strong organisational roots. He is closely associated with the BJP’s core structure and has a background in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which has further strengthened his standing within the party. The election process will be overseen by BJP chief election officer K. Lakshman, who will formally announce the name of the new national president. As per reports, three sets of nomination papers will be filed. One set will bear the signatures of more than 20 elected BJP state presidents, another will be signed by senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and outgoing BJP president J.P. Nadda, while the third will carry the signatures of members of the BJP National Council. Notably, J.P. Nadda himself had followed a similar path, first serving as national working president in 2019 before being elected unopposed as BJP president in January 2020, succeeding Amit Shah.
