From Modest Beginnings to Strategic Backbone: India’s Defence Journey Mirrors DRDO’s Rise
India’s defence journey has evolved hand in hand with the growth of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, reflecting on the organisation’s remarkable transformation. Established in 1958 as a small setup with just ten laboratories, DRDO began its journey at a time when resources were limited and technological ambitions were modest. Over the decades, DRDO steadily expanded its reach and capabilities. Today, it operates around 45 laboratories working across critical domains such as aeronautics, missile systems, electronics, armaments, life sciences, advanced computing and naval systems. This growth has turned DRDO into the backbone of India’s defence capability, playing a central role in strengthening national security. The Defence Minister highlighted that DRDO’s contribution goes far beyond equipment development. From missile technology and rocket systems to electronic warfare and life sciences, the organisation has built confidence in indigenous solutions. Its work has not only supplied advanced defence equipment but has also nurtured trust in India’s own scientific and technical strength. Drawing a parallel with the broader defence sector, Rajnath Singh noted that India once relied heavily on foreign technology due to limited choices and challenging circumstances. However, the country has now entered a new era one focused on self-reliance, innovation and strategic independence marking a decisive shift in India’s defence outlook.
