Viksit UDAN Takes Flight as India Expands Regional Aviation
New Delhi, July 4, 2026 India took another major step towards strengthening regional air connectivity and modernising its aviation network on Saturday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the next phase of the regional connectivity programme, 'Viksit UDAN', and inaugurated the new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport. The twin initiatives reflect the government's continued focus on making air travel more accessible, expanding aviation infrastructure and supporting balanced economic growth across urban and remote regions. The event was attended by Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol and other dignitaries. Since its launch in 2016, the UDAN scheme has connected 95 airports, heliports and water aerodromes through 669 operational routes, benefiting over 1.66 crore passengers. The modified scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2026 with an outlay of nearly ₹29,000 crore, aims to develop 100 additional aerodromes, construct 200 modern helipads, strengthen regional airport operations and encourage the use of indigenous aircraft and helicopters in underserved areas. Speaking at the event, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the next phase of UDAN marks a new chapter in India’s aviation journey and reflects Prime Minister Modi’s vision of making air travel affordable and accessible for every citizen. He said the scheme has evolved beyond a connectivity initiative into a catalyst for economic growth by creating opportunities for farmers, students, entrepreneurs, artisans and businesses, while strengthening tourism, employment and social inclusion across Tier-2, Tier-3 and remote regions. Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the new ₹480-crore terminal at Jodhpur Airport, developed by the Airports Authority of India. Designed to handle up to 20 lakh passengers annually, the terminal features expanded passenger amenities, advanced aviation infrastructure, sustainable building practices and architecture inspired by Rajasthan's royal heritage. Highlighting the government's long-term vision for the aviation sector, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the new terminal reflects Rajasthan’s rich heritage while the extension of the UDAN scheme for another decade will further democratise aviation by integrating every region into India’s growth story. Together, the launch of Viksit UDAN and the commissioning of the new terminal reinforce the Centre’s commitment to improving regional connectivity, promoting tourism and trade, and creating a stronger, more inclusive aviation ecosystem for the future.
